Neeltje  was born on January 27th, 1709.  Neeltje 's father was Jacob Pietersz Groot and her mother was Geertje Jans.  Her paternal grandfather was Pieter Groot. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Pieter, Jan, Diewertje, Diewertje , Maartje and Lijsbet .  She was the third oldest of the seven children. She had a half-brother named Sijmon.
