Maartje was born on February 26th, 1713.  Maartje's father was Jacob Pietersz Groot and her mother was Geertje Jans.  Her paternal grandfather was Pieter Groot. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Pieter, Jan, Diewertje, Diewertje , Neeltje  and Lijsbet .  She was the second youngest of the seven children. She had a half-brother named Sijmon.
