Jan was born about 1814 in Nieuwe Niedorp.  Jan's father was Teunis Groot (de) and his mother was Trijntje Pijper.  His paternal grandparents were Pieter Groot and Jantje Teunis Laan; his maternal grandparents were Jan Klaasz Pijper and Maartje Jans de Vries. He had a brother and eight sisters, named Pieter, Jantje, Maartje, Kniertje, Neeltje, Pietertje, Geertje, Crelisje and Cornelia.  He was the third youngest of the ten children.  He died on April 25th, 1862.
