Ruth was born in 1800.  Ruth's father was Robert Carman and her mother was Elizabeth Collingwood/Carman.  Her paternal grandparents were John Carman and Mary Crowfoot/Carman.  She had five brothers and three sisters, named John, Robert, William, James, Christopher, Elizabeth, Rebecca and Elizabeth.  She was the second oldest of the nine children.  She had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Patrick and Mary Ann.
