John was born in 1799.  John's father was Robert Carman and his mother was Elizabeth Collingwood/Carman.  His paternal grandparents were John Carman and Mary Crowfoot/Carman.  He had four brothers and four sisters, named Robert, William, James, Christopher, Ruth, Elizabeth, Rebecca and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the nine children.  He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Patrick and Mary Ann.  He died at the age of 84 on August 30th, 1883 in Eldorado, Ontario, Canada.  His burial was in Fox Cemetery, Eldorado, Ontario.1
