Martha Hawes was born in 1854 in Haverhill, Suffolk, England.  Martha Hawes' father is Thomas Gowers and her mother was Matilda Hawes.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Gowers and Rebecca Farrant; her maternal grandparents were George Hawes and Charlotte Mayer. She had nine brothers and eight sisters, named Thomas, Thomas, George, John Hawes, William Hawes, Frank Hawes, Frank, Tom, John, Emily Hawes, Eliza, Ellen, Eliza Hawes, Ellen, Ellen Hawes, Alice Hawes and Kate Hawes. She had a half-brother and a half-sister, named John and Ellen.  She died at the age of 5 in 1859 in Haverhill, Suffolk, England.
