Matilda was born on February 19th, 1827 in Haverhill, Suffolk, , England.1   Matilda's father was George Hawes and her mother was Charlotte Mayer.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Hawes and Elizabeth Baines; her maternal grandfather is William Mayer and her maternal grandmother was Sarah Parmenter. She had three brothers and five sisters, named King, George, William, Susannah Priscilla, Emily, Eliza, Eliza and Eva Charlotte.  She was the oldest of the nine children.  She died at the age of 78 in March 1905 in Cambridgeshire, Essex, Suffolk, United Kingdom.1
