Eliza was born on May 15th, 1836 in Haverhill, Suffolk, , England.  Eliza's father was George Hawes and her mother was Charlotte Mayer.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Hawes and Elizabeth Baines; her maternal grandfather is William Mayer and her maternal grandmother was Sarah Parmenter. She had three brothers and five sisters, named King, George, William, Matilda, Susannah Priscilla, Emily, Eliza and Eva Charlotte.  She is the third youngest of the nine children.
