William was born in 1844 in Haverhill, Suffolk, England.1   William's father was George Hawes and his mother was Charlotte Mayer.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Hawes and Elizabeth Baines; his maternal grandfather is William Mayer and his maternal grandmother was Sarah Parmenter. He had two brothers and six sisters, named King, George, Matilda, Susannah Priscilla, Emily, Eliza, Eliza and Eva Charlotte.  He was the youngest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 60 on November 5th, 1904.
