Eliza was born about 1851 in Haverhill, Suffolk, England.1   Eliza's father is Thomas Gowers and her mother was Matilda Hawes.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Gowers and Rebecca Farrant; her maternal grandparents were George Hawes and Charlotte Mayer. She had nine brothers and eight sisters, named Thomas, Thomas, George, John Hawes, William Hawes, Frank Hawes, Frank, Tom, John, Emily Hawes, Ellen, Eliza Hawes, Ellen, Martha Hawes, Ellen Hawes, Alice Hawes and Kate Hawes. She has a half-brother and a half-sister, named John and Ellen.
