Robert was born in July 1781 in Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland and his baptism took place there in July 1781.  Robert's father was Daniel Stewart and his mother was Catharine McLaren.  His paternal grandparents were Niel Stewart and May Robertson; his maternal grandparents were Alexander McLaren and Margaret Cameron. He had a brother and a sister, named Duncan and Margaret.  He was the youngest of the three children.
