Duncan was born on August 30th, 1778 in Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland and his baptism took place there on August 30th, 1778.  Duncan's father was Daniel Stewart and his mother was Catharine McLaren.  His paternal grandparents were Niel Stewart and May Robertson; his maternal grandparents were Alexander McLaren and Margaret Cameron. He had a brother and a sister, named Robert and Margaret.  He was the second oldest of the three children.
