Mary's father was William Ross and her mother was Jane Grant.  Her paternal grandparents were John Ross and Margaret Stewart; her maternal grandparents were Peter Grant and Margaret Currie. She had two brothers and five sisters, named George, Alexander, Margaret, Isabella, Jane, Jessie and Elizabeth.  She was the third youngest of the eight children.
