Janet's father was John Nicholson and her mother was Janet McRostie. Her maternal grandparents were Peter John McRosty and Margaret Stewart. Peter Nicholson and Barbara Craik were her grandparents through her father's adoption. She had a brother and a sister, named Peter Theodore and Helen. She was the second oldest of the three children.
