Walter was born on November 11th, 1740 in Coaltown of Fordell, Dalgety, Fife, Scotland.  Walter's father was James Beveridge and his mother was Dorothy Williamson.  His paternal grandparents were James Beveridge and Catharine Paton; his maternal grandparents were John Williamson and Unknown. He had two brothers and six sisters, named John, Alexander, Euphan, Elizabeth, Effie, Alison, Janet and Margaret.  He was the youngest of the nine children.
