Margaret was born on February 7th, 1739 in Coaltown of Fordell, Dalgety, Fife, Scotland.  Margaret's father was James Beveridge and her mother was Dorothy Williamson.  Her paternal grandparents were James Beveridge and Catharine Paton; her maternal grandparents were John Williamson and Unknown. She had three brothers and five sisters, named John, Alexander, Walter, Euphan, Elizabeth, Effie, Alison and Janet.  She was the second youngest of the nine children.
