Alison was born on January 21st, 1732 in Coaltown of Fordell, Dalgety, Fife, Scotland.  Alison's father was James Beveridge and her mother was Dorothy Williamson.  Her paternal grandparents were James Beveridge and Catharine Paton; her maternal grandparents were John Williamson and Unknown. She had three brothers and five sisters, named John, Alexander, Walter, Euphan, Elizabeth, Effie, Janet and Margaret.  She was the fourth oldest of the nine children.
