Grissel was born on October 9th, 1773 in Fordel, Dalgety, Fife, Scotland. Grissel's father was John Beveridge and her mother was Grissel Symsone. Her paternal grandparents were John Beveridge and Grissel (Grisle) Simson (Symsone). She had six brothers and a sister, named John, James, William, Alexander, Alexander, George and Elizabeth. She was the third youngest of the eight children.-
