Thomas was born on January 24th, 1722 in Pitgorne, Strathmiglo, Fife, Scotland. Thomas' father was William Beath (of Pitgorne) and his mother was Mary Orrock.  His paternal grandparents were William Beath and Katherine Storer; his maternal grandparents were John Or James? Orrock and Mary Crawford. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, John, Marjorie, Katharine, Jean, Kathleen and Sophia.  He was the third oldest of the eight children. He had seven half-brothers named David, George, Robert, William, George, George and David.
