Gottfried was born on June 6th, 1846 in Leipzig (Leibzig), Bessarabia, Russia (now Ukraine).1  Gottfried's father was Johann Kraft and his mother was Anna Louisa Sprecher (Kraft, Haehn, Sommerfeld).  His maternal grandparents were Gottfried Sprecher and Anna Katharina Sokolosky (Sprecher). He had a brother and a sister, named Daniel and Anna.  He was the youngest of the three children. He had two half-brothers and five half-sisters, named Andreas, Johann, Louise, Catharina, Maria, Karolina and Juliana.
