Sarah was born on September 18th, 1848 in Plane Street (no 11), Leeds, Yorkshire.¹ Sarah's father was William Gale and her mother was Elizabeth Jordan. Her paternal grandparents were William Gale and Elizabeth Stead; her maternal grandparents were Dennis Jordan and Harriet Oxley. She had a brother and three sisters, named Thomas, Elizabeth, Ellen and Hannah. She was the oldest of the five children.
