David was born in 1786 in Nether Witton, Northumberland and his baptism took place there on December 31st, 1786. David's father was John Farrer and his mother was Isabel Amery. He had three brothers and two sisters, named James, John, Thomas, Ann and Jane. He was the youngest of the six children.
