His paternal grandparents were James Brooksbank and Mary Broadbent; his maternal grandparents were James Roberts and Harriet Richardson. He had three brothers and six sisters, named John, Mark, James, Harriet, Mary, Matilda, Alice, Caroline and Eliza. He was the oldest of the ten children.-
