James was born in 1823 in Tong, Bradford, Yorkshire and his baptism took place there on June 22nd, 1823.1 2 James' father was James Brooksbank and his mother was Mary Broadbent. He had four brothers and six sisters, named John, Joseph, Daniel, Mark, Anne, Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth, Ester and Alice. He was the fourth oldest of the eleven children.
