Her paternal grandparents were Henry Boynton and Mary Ann Cowgill; her maternal grandparents were William Hargraves and Susannah Coates. She had six brothers and two sisters, named Samuel, William, Walter, Arthur, William, Jesse, Sarah and Ada. She was the second oldest of the nine children.-
