Herman was born on August 25th, 1881.  Herman's father was Wilhelm Friedrich Christoph Laue and his mother was Hanna Friederike Louise Scherf. He had four brothers and six sisters, named Otto, Heinrich, Friedrich, Friedrich, Marie, Helene, Sophie, Cathrine, Elise and Anna.  He was the oldest of the eleven children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Johannes and Elizabeth.  He died at the age of 64 on May 11th, 1946.
