Joshua's father was Benjamin Whitney and his mother was Jane.  His paternal grandparents were John Whitney and Elinor. He had five brothers and a sister, named Nathaniel, Timothy, John, Jonathan, Benjamin and Jane. He had two half-brothers named Mark and Isaac.
