Stephen's father was Abraham Cole and his mother was Levincey B. Alston. His paternal grandfather was Solomon Cole and his paternal grandmother is Elizabeth Davis. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Abner, Dawson, Abraham, Phillip, Raphael, Rachel, Mary, Susanna and Adeleine. He was the fifth oldest of the ten children.
