Dawson's father was Abraham Cole and his mother was Levincey B. Alston. His paternal grandfather was Solomon Cole and his paternal grandmother is Elizabeth Davis. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Abner, Stephen, Abraham, Phillip, Raphael, Rachel, Mary, Susanna and Adeleine. He was the third oldest of the ten children. He died at the age of 72 on October 8th, 1905 in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana.
