Thomas was born on March 15th, 1829 in Ripley, Derbyshire, England.  Thomas' father was James Stanley and his mother was Mary Oliver.  His maternal grandparents were Robert Oliver and Sarah. He had two brothers and six sisters, named Oliver, James, Ann, Alice, Mary, Martha, Deborah and Susanna.
