Martha was born on November 28th, 1841 in Ripley, Derbyshire, England.  Martha's father was James Stanley and her mother was Mary Oliver.  Her maternal grandparents were Robert Oliver and Sarah. She had three brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, Oliver, James, Ann, Alice, Mary, Deborah and Susanna.
