Gundred de Warenne m. (2) William de Lancaster I, d. 1170, 5th Baron Kendal of Workington in Coupland, son of Gilbert, 4th Baron Kendal; he inherited an extensive fief held of the Honour of Coupland, served as castellan of William fitz Duncan's castle of Egremont in 1138, and was Governor of the Caslte of Lancaster. [Ancestral Roots, line 88-25] Note: Their daughter Avice's birthdate is about 1145 according to some, but if Plantagenet Ancestry is right in attributing her mother to be Gundred (Ancestral Roots gives no mother), then an 1154 date would be much more likely. This also involves making subsequent descendant birthdates a bit later as well. Note also: Ancestral Roots states that Gilbert de Stainton is probably son of William I de Lancaster. However I believe that chronologically he is more likely to be a brother. --- Sources: Title: AFN: Abbrev: AFN: Title: Royal Genealogy Abbrev: Royal Genealogy Author: Brian Tompsett Publication: 1994-1999 Title: Paul B. Notes from http://stirnet.com/html/genie/british/ff/fife1.htm#linklo Orm de Abernethy (a 1172/3) .. Orm, son of Hugh, is identified in TSP(Saltoun), and also 'Fife: Pictorial and Historical', as ancestor of the Abernethy family. BP1999 (Saltoun) identifies that Hugh as son of Gillemichael, 3rd Earl of Fife. That claim was not made for BP1934 (Saltoun) so it is assumed that some additional evidence has been found to justify that identification.

Herbert Maxwell, 1st Lord Maxwell, so created between 8 Jan 1440/1 and 3 July 1445; knighted 1424; married 1st ?, daughter of Sir Herbert Herries of Terregles; married 2nd Catherine, daughter of Sir William Seton of Seton and widow of Sir Alan Stewart of Darnley, and died by 14 Feb 1453/4. [Burke's Peerage] ------------------------------------------------ About Caerlaverock Castle: The story is obscure until about 1356 when Roger Kirkpatrick is recorded as having returned the whole of Nithsdale to the Scottish Crown. Much of the castle as it is today was completed in the late fifteenth century by Herbert Maxwell, first Lord Maxwell and his son Robert second Lord Maxwell. Caerlaverock Castle once again figured in the conflicts between Scotland and England in the sixteenth century.

William Douglas, 1st Earl of Douglas, as which created 26 Jan 1357/8; of age by 1348; present Battle of Poitiers 1356 where wounded fighting alongside the French against the English; married probably just prior to 13 Nov 1357 Margaret, Countess of Mar in her own right, and adopted her Earldom of Mar as his own by 21 June 1374; died May 1384. The 1st Earl also had illegitimate issue by Margaret Stewart, Countess of Angus in her own right. [Burke's Peerage] Built Tantallon Castle about 1350. Click here for Photo of Tantallon Castle (use browser back arrow to return) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Copied from "Douglas Family" by Mark Freeman, freepages.genalogy.rootsweb.com/~markfreeman/douglas.html: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "On the death of his brother-in-law [Thomas Stewart] he obtained possession of the historical earldom of Mar and transmitted it, along with his own hereditary titles and estates, to his son James, the hero of Otterburn, 'the dead man that won a fight' one of the most renowned in Scottish history. The Douglas estates were inherited by Archibald 'the Grim,' the kinsman of Earl James, while the earldom of Mar passed to his sister, Isabella, wife of Sir Malcolm Drummond, brother of Annabella, Queen of Scotland, wife of Robert III. Though he is often shown as having married Margaret of Mar, daughter of Donald of Mar, that is questionable. He had illegitimate children with Margaret Stewart, whose father was Earl of Mar, but she was Countess of Angus (having inherited this title from her brother). Widely varying dates of birth for the legitimate children make it possible that he was, in fact, married twice. " ... son of the Regent who fell at Halidon Hill, and nephew of the 'Good Sir James,' returned from France, where he had been bred to arms, soon after the battle of Neville's Cross and the captivity of the Scottish king, and, with the hereditary valour and energy of his house, succeeded in expelling the English from Douglasdale, and in the course of time from Ettrick Forest, Tweeddale, and Teviotdale. He was created Earl of Douglas by King David in 1357. He faithfully supported the cause of national independence, and even went so far as to unite with the Steward and the Earl of March in a formal bond to compel David to change his counsellors and to give up his intrigues for altering the succession to the crown in favour of one of the sons of the English king. He made a pilgramage to the shrine of St. Thomas-a-Becket in the year 1363; but, unlike some others of the great Scottish barons, who made such pilgramages a pretext for treasonable intrigues with the English Government, Douglas continued steadfast in his adherence of his country's cause, and resolutely opposed the atempts of the unworthy son of Robert Bruce to betray it to the enemy. On the accession of Robert II, the son of the Steward and Marjory Bruce, the Earl of Douglas unexpectedly put forth pretensions to the crown, but abandoned them on finding that they were not likely to meet with public support. As a reward for the promptitude of his submission, the King's eldest daughter was promised in marriage to his eldest son, and the Earl himself was appointed Justicular of Scotland south of the Forth, and Warden of the East Marches. This great noble, one of the best of his race, died in 1384 at an advance age. He was succeeded by his eldest son by his wife the Countess of Mar." 1st Earl of Angus [SCT] as a Stewart, XIV in CP; styled in a charter dated 15 June 1329, Earl of Angus [SCT]; knighted 24 November 1331 at the coronation of David II; Papal dispensation dated 24 October 1328 as being within the fourth degree of consanguinity. --- Sir John Stewart, 1st Earl of Angus & suo jure uxoris Lord of Abernethy (died 1331) was a medieval Scottish nobleman. Stewart was the son of Sir Alexander Stewart of Bonkyll, grandson of Alexander Stewart, 4th High Steward of Scotland and an unknown mother. Sir Alexander died c. 1319, and Stewart inherited his father's estates in Berwickshire, centred upon the barony of Bonkyll and Preston. In 1328 he married Margaret de Abernethy, heiress to the Lordship of Abernethy. Her father Sir Alexander de Abernethy being the last of the Gaelic lords of Abernethy, descendants of Gille Míchéil, Earl of Fife. Stewart assumed his wife's titles, and was further ennobled by Robert I of Scotland in 1329, being created Earl of Angus. The Earldom of Angus had been forfeited by the previous holder, Robert de Umfreville, before 1314, for choosing the losing side during the Wars of Scottish Independence, although he continued to style himself Earl until his death in 1325. It is through John Stewart's granddaughter, Margaret's illicit relationship with William Douglas, 1st Earl of Douglas, that the Earldom of Angus, Lordship of Abernethy, and the comitatus associated with it passed on to the Douglases in the person of George Douglas (the first Red Douglas). This close connection of the Douglas Earls of Angus with the House of Stewart, was to have large implications for the latter's future struggles with the Black Douglases. Stewart was invested with Knighthood in November 1331, but died just two weeks later. He was succeeded by his son Thomas Stewart, 2nd Earl of Angus. William de Heriz was witness to various royal charters, dating from 1175 to 1199. His descendant, Nigel, held lands in Selkirkshire so early as the reign of Alexander II.; a charter from that monarch to the monks of Melrose describing certain property granted to them as extending “from the river Etreyich, by the rivulet of Tymeye, as far as the marches of Nigel de Heriz.” Soon afterwards, we find the family settling down in the Vale of Nith. Their head, William de Herris, swore fealty to Edward I. for his lands in Galloway; and Robert, the son of William, is designated “Dominus de Nithsdale: in a charter granted to him, in 1323, by King Robert Bruce. [Ibid, vol. i., p. 726.]

Black shows William de Heriz to have been the first of that name recorded in Scotland, appearing as witness to charters by Earl Henry, David I, William the Lion, and Walter the Steward, among others, and, in 1296, taking the oath of fealty to England. http://www.clanmaxwellusa.com/herries.htm ================== The first member of the family of Heriz to hold land here seems to have been Henry. William de Heriz granted 2 oxgangs of land in Claxton, which had belonged to Henry de Heriz, to St. Giles Hospital in the late 12th or early 13th century. (fn. 48) Leo son of William de Heriz was a contemporary of Walter de Musters, (fn. 49) and was probably the Leo who was sheriff of Durham under Bishop Philip (1197–1208) and mentioned as a tenant in the bishopric in 1211. (fn. 50) He must also be identified with the Leo de Heriz who assigned to the Prior of Durham 2 oxgangs as the endowment of a chapel at Claxton. A later prior released them to his grandson Leo in 1233–44. (fn. 51) The latter was called Leo de Claxton, (fn. 52) and was probably succeeded by the Sir William de Heriz who lived at Claxton in 1264.
