Hugh was born on August 5th, 1800 in Orange Co., N. C..1   Hugh's father was Samuel R. Woods and his mother was Elizabeth Woods.  His paternal grandparents were John Woods and Anne Louey Mebane; his maternal grandparents were Hugh Woods and Mary Dunnegan. He had a brother and four sisters, named Samuel R., Jane M., Mary Ann, Margaret Allison and Susan Faucette.  He was the oldest of the six children. He had three half-brothers named Joseph A., John A. and David.1
