William Phelps 
William was born on November 1st, 1808 in Palmyra, New York.1 William's father was Stephen Phelps and his mother was Lois Day. His paternal grandparents were Luke Phelps and Ann Freeman; his maternal grandparents were Samuel Day and Lois Merrick. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Alexis, Myron, Stephen Summer, Charles, Laura and Emily. He was the second youngest of the seven children. He died at the age of 80 on October 16th, 1889 in Lewistown, Illinois.1 General Notes

William Phelps (1808-1889) was the son of Stephen Phelps who was a Judge in New York and a merchant in Lewistown, Illinois.
When William Phelps was 24, he married Caroline Kelsey and went to Iowa to establish a trading post. His blonde wife was the heroine of the book "Yellow Rose." The Indians William Phelps dealt with were enthraled with her blonde hair. They almost worshiped her. They also considered it very good luck to touch her "yellow hair." In 1846, he sold the trading post and returned to Lewistown where he engaged in several different businesses. He was a trained tanner and traded with the Indians who got along well with the Indian tribes in the area. (Including Keokuk and Blackhawk, chiefs of the Blackhawk tribe). He was always considered a "fair dealer." He was also "Captain" of a riverboat.
During the Civil War, he was appointed Provost Marshall for his Congressional District.
