William was born on April 8th, 1850.1   William's father was John Jacob Rhodes Gilchrist and his mother was Effie Fairly.  His paternal grandparents were Angus Gilchrist and Elizabeth McNeill; his maternal grandfather was John Fairly. He had four brothers and two sisters, named James A., John Fairly, Angus, Robert, Flora McNeil and Sallie Elizabeth.  He was the third youngest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 77 on February 2nd, 1928.1
