Matthew Cushing was a wheelwright by occupation. He took an active part in the affairs of the town; was Selectman 13 times between 1661 and 1705; freeman in 1679; was known as Sergeant and later as Lieutenant. He resided at Hingham Center over the river. In his will of Dec. 28, 1700, after providing for his wife, he left his estate to his nephew, Matthew Cushing, who had lived with him.
