Alma Ruth's father was Jodie Hanes Atkins and her mother was Julia Eva Latta. Her paternal grandparents were Josiah Atkins and Mary Hawkins Barbee; her maternal grandparents were James Osborn Latta and Eugenia Hellen Duke.
