Joanna was born about 1311 in Rusky, Perthshire, Scotland.  Joanna's father was John Menteith and her mother was Ellen de Mar.  Her paternal grandfather was Laird of Ruskie; her maternal grandparents were Gartnet (Gartney) Macglylocher of Mar and Christina Bruce. She had a brother and a sister, named John and Christian Monteith.  She was the oldest of the three children.  She died after 1367.
