Murdoch was born in 1365 in Falkland Castle, Fifeshire, Scotland. Murdoch's father was Roger?+ Stewart and his mother was Margaret+ Graham. His paternal grandparents were Robert II+ Stewart and Elizabeth+ Mure; his maternal grandparents were John+ Graham and Mary+ Stewart. He had three sisters named Margaret+ Maria, Isabel and Joan+. He was the second oldest of the four children. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named John, Marjory and Elizabeth+.
