"Roger de Mortimer was the 8th Baron Mortimer of Wigmore. He was created Earl of Marche and executed in 1330. (Americans of Royal Descent, Charles H Browning, p 524-525). Roger de Mortimer, 8th Lord of Wigmore, "was he who is so well known in our general histories as the favourite of Isabel, the queen of Edward II. In the parliament begun the 2nd year of Edward III, he caused himself to be advanced to the title of Earl March; and the same year (held) a Round Table at Bedford. After which, King Edward ... was magnificently entertained by this Roger,in his castles of Ludlow and Wigmore; and so likewise in his forests and parks, with great costs in tiltings and other pastimes." "But hereupon he grew proud beyond measure; insomuch that his own son, Geffrey, called him the King of Folly. He also kept the Round Table in Wales for a pride, in imitation of the knights of King Arthur`s Round Table." Nottingham Castle, using a underground passage, which is yet called Mortimer`s Hole. He was accused of certain high crimes, found guilty, and sentenced "to be drawn and hanged." He was executed at the common gallows called the Elmes near Smithfield. His naked body hung there for two days and two nights. First buried at Grey Friars, his body was finally laid to rest at Wigmore. (The Royal Ancestors of George Leib Harrison, p 58). "

The following narrative account provided by Reynaud de Paysac, who cites "History of the Mortimer Family":
"Roger, inherited wide estates in England, Wales and Ireland, married well, became a succesful soldier in Scotland, Wales, Ireland and France and staged a revolt against the king. He was betrayed, forced to surrender, sentenced to death, reprieved, locked up in the Tower of London, sentencd to death again, reprieved again. He escaped from the Tower, fled to France and there seduced (or was seduced by) the Queen of England, Isabella, the She-Wolf of France. Together they travelled to Holland and bartered the hand in marriage of the future King Edward III for a small army. Then they returned to England, routed King Edward II and forced him to abdicate. Roger probably ordered the King's 'death' on 21/22 September 1327, and his own elevation to the Earldom of March on 31 October 1328. With the Queen he ruled England as a virtual monarch for four years before finally being arrested at Nottingham Castle by the 18 year-old Edward III, and hanged at Tyburn 'like a common criminal'. You can say many things about Roger Mortimer, 1st Earl of March, but one thing he was not was a common criminal."
