His paternal grandparents are George Hiatt and Martha Wakefield; his maternal grandparents were Richard Williams and Prudence Beals. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Joel, Isam, Silas, Asher, Prudence, Rachel, Ruth, Esther and Rebecca. He was the second oldest of the ten children.
