William Alexander was born on February 15th, 1811 in London, England. William Alexander's father was Alexander Douglas-Hamilton and his mother was Susan Euphamia Beckford. His paternal grandparents were Archibald Douglas-Hamilton and Harriet Stewart; his maternal grandparents were William Thomas Beckford and Margaret Gordon. He had a sister named Susan.
