Etienne I De Sancerre De was born about 1135. Etienne I De Sancerre De's father was Thibaud IV De+ Champagne-Blois and his mother was Mathilde Von+ Sponheim. His paternal grandparents were Etienne Henri III De+ Champagne-Blois and Adaele Of+ Normandy; his maternal grandparents were Engelbert II Von+ Sponheim and Uta Von+ Passau. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Henri I De+, Thibaud V De+, Marie De Blois De+, Agnes De+, Adaele De+ and Mahaut De. He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
