Robert, Abbot of was born about 1083 in Avranches, Manche, Normandy. Robert, Abbot of's father was Hugh d'Aurange Lupus Earl of Chester and his mother is Hermentrude Ermengard de Clermont. His paternal grandparents were Richard "Le Goz" Vicomte D'Avranches and Lady Emma de Conteville; his maternal grandparents were Hugh I de Creil de Beauvais Count of Clermont and Margaret de Roucy Montdidier. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Philippe, Othewell, Richard, Robert, Maud, Mavila and Geva. He was the fourth oldest of the eight children. He died in of St. Edmond.General Notes

When Henry I came to the throne, he gave the abbacy of St. Edmund to Robert, one of the illegitimate sons of Hugh Lupus, earl of Chester. Two years later this Robert was deposed, because he had accepted the office without the consent or the election of the monks. [Victoria History of Suffolk, p. 59]
