Alfonso X was born on November 23rd, 1221 in Burgos, Castile & Leon, Spain. Alfonso X's father was Alfonsez King of Castile & Leon Fernando III and his mother was Beatrice (Elizabeth) von Hohenstaufen. His paternal grandparents were Alfonso Fernandez IX The Slobberer King Of Leon and Princess Berengaria Queen of Leon and Castile; his maternal grandparents were Philip II Hohenstaufen , Holy Roman Emperor and Irini Maria Angelina [Empress of Germ. He had three brothers named Felipe, Sancho and Manuel. He was the oldest of the four children. He had a half-sister named Princess Of Castile and Leon. Alfonso X, El Sabio, or the learned, (1221-1284, reigned 1252-1284), kingof Castile and León, is perhaps the most interesting, though far from themost capable, of the Spanish kings of the Middle Ages.
He was a writer, and he had considerable scientific fame, based mainly onhis encouragement of astronomy and the Ptolemaic cosmogony as known tohim through the Arabs. The moon crater Alphonsus is named after him.
He established at Toledo a translation school that did a great work inbringing the knowledge of the Arabs and Jews into Christian Europe. Muchof it was based on Classical philosophy.
As a ruler he showed legislative capacity, and a very commendable wish toprovide his kingdoms with a code of laws and a consistent judicialsystem. The Fuero Real was undoubtedly his work, and he began the codecalled the Siete Partidas, which, however, was only promulgated by hisgreat-grandson. He lacked the singleness of purpose required by a rulerwho would devote himself to organization, and also the combination offirmness with temper needed for dealing with his nobles. His descent fromthe Hohenstaufen through his mother, a daughter of the emperor Philip ofSwabia, gave him claims to represent the Swabian line. The choice of theGerman electors, after the death of Conrad IV in 1254, misled him intowild schemes which never took effect but caused immense expense. Toobtain money he debased the coinage, and then endeavoured to prevent arise in prices by an arbitrary tariff. The little trade of his dominionswas ruined, and the burghers and peasants were deeply offended. Hisnobles, whom he tried to cow by sporadic acts of violence, rebelledagainst him.
His second son, Sancho, enforced his claim to be heir, in preference tothe children of Ferdinand de la Cerda, the elder brother who died inAlfonso's life. Son and nobles alike supported the Moors, when he triedto unite the nation in a crusade; and when he allied himself with therulers of Morocco they denounced him as an enemy of the faith. A reactionin his favour was beginning in his later days, but he died defeated anddeserted at Seville, leaving a will by which he endeavoured to excludeSancho and a heritage of civil war.
In addition to his other achievements, Alfonso X commissioned orco-authored numerous works during his reign, including the Cantigas deSanta Maria (400+ songs mentioning the Virgin Mary, Galician-Portuguese)and the Libro de los juegos, or "Book of Games".
