His paternal grandparents were , King of Wessex (England) Egbert "The Great" and Redburga d'Autun Queen of Wessex; his maternal grandfather is Earl Oslac the Royal Cup Bearer of Wessex. He had six brothers and three sisters, named Anglo-Saxons King of England, King of East Anglia, Anglo-Saxons King of Kent, I King of England, King of All England, King of Kent, Essex, and, Anglo-Saxons Queen, Ethelswith and Judith. He died in 0866. He was buried in Sherborne Abbey, Wimborne, Dorsetshire, England.1 General Notes

It is said that he led a rebellion against his fath er after Æthelwulf had married Judith of France. Æthelwul f may have withdrawn to Kent, leaving Æthelbald as king i n Wessex (c. 856). He certainly became king in the West a t Æthelwulf's death (858); his brother Æthelbert may hav e succeeded in the East. Considerable scandal seems to hav e been caused by his marriage with his father's widow, Judi th.

Æthelbert, d. 865, king of WESSEX (860-65), son of ÆTHELWUL F. After his father's death in 858, he ruled KENT, Surrey , SUSSEX, and ESSEX, reuniting them with Wessex when in 86 0 he succeeded his brother Æthelbald in that kingdom.
