The mother of William Malet was a sister of Algar. The claim of the earls of Chester of descent from the ancient earls of Mercia through the Countess Lucia among other things, renders this deduction the most plausible. There can be no doubt that William Malet was English on his mother's side and closely connected
with King Harold, who m. the dau. of Earl Algar. Furthermore, William Malet witnessed immediately after the earls a charter recorded by Dugdale, of William the Conqueror in favour of the church of Saint-Martin le Grand in London, to which he affixed "Princeps" after his name. His Mercian blood could have been one of the reasons for thus honouring him, although the title was not hereditary as sometimes happened at that period. [Falaise Roll, p. 159]
