His paternal grandfather was William J. McQueen and his paternal grandmother is Susannah Graham. He had three brothers and four sisters, named James Robinson, John W., William Hamilton, Orilla V., Laura F., Emma Caroline and Julia R.. He was the third youngest of the eight children.
