His paternal grandparents were Joseph Thomas DeSpain and Sarah Frances Warren. He had two brothers and ten sisters, named Raymond Alex, Everett C., Nora A., Mary Gertrude, Lona Beatrice, Amy Frances, Alma, Nora A., Delcie Marie, Stella Kathleen, Grace Louise and Nettie Darlene.
