Hersy Grant was born on August 30th, 1885 in Floyd Co., Virginia.1 Hersy Grant's father was James Haden Basham and his mother was Laura Ellen Lawrence. His paternal grandparents were Hillory H. Basham and Sarah Ridinger. He had three brothers named Albert Andrew, Amherst Sheridan and Mary Grace. He was the second oldest of the four children.
